Stephen Shaiju Mathew

Data Analyst

Stephen is a Data Analyst at CivicDataLab, working at the intersection of data, climate action, and disaster risk reduction. From building data pipelines on a computer to collecting data in the field, he enjoys working across the entire data journey especially when the subject is climate.

As part of CivicDataLab’s Climate Action vertical, Stephen works across research and data-driven problem solving, with a strong focus on climate resilience, extreme weather, rural livelihoods, forests, and disaster risk reduction (DRR). He currently contributes to IDS-DRR, bringing together data, research, geospatial analysis, and field insights to understand how climate and disaster risks affect communities. His work spans everything from building data pipelines and analysing large datasets to field-level data collection and research.

Before CivicDataLab, Stephen worked with SEEDS India, an NGO focused on disaster risk resilience, where he worked as a Data Analyst on extreme-weather and climate datasets. His experience combines technical data work with the realities of working on climate and disaster challenges at the community level.

M.Sc. in Applied Physics, Delhi Technological University (DTU). A film fanatic at heart, Stephen has made short films, documentaries, and passion projects for NGOs, private organisations, and simply because a good story demanded to be told. His personal philosophy: Never give up on yourself, because at the end of the day… it’s Night! and there is nothing a good sleep can't solve.
